Welcome back friends, this is the first edition of 2023!

I hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable new year and are ready (like me) to get into this year with renewed motivation.

I've been easing myself back into creative work this past week by cleaning up my digital tools, doing my annual review, and learning to draw/sketch digitally (I'm most excited about this point).

I got an Apple Pencil for Christmas and have been delightedly sketching with it in Procreate for 10-15 minutes each day.

As someone who can't draw very well in any medium, I found the learning curve quite intimidating at first but I'm going into it with the mindset that I need to practice to get better. The more hours I put into it, the better I'll get and the easier drawing and sketching digitally will be.

With that in mind, I wanted to share where I started my learning journey and where I hope to end up. So I did what I normally do and wrote an article which you can find a link to below 👇 I hope you enjoy it and find it helpful if you're in a similar place.

Let's get started.

📃 2 Articles

How to get started learning to draw with an iPad and Apple Pencil

The article in 3 ideas:

  1. The more hours you put into practicing something, the better you'll get. Your first few (hundred) attempts will be bad but you'll improve with consistent practice.

  2. Make getting started easy. Pick a tool you like and just start practicing.

  3. Following along with YouTube tutorials is truly the best way to learn the basics.

Digital detoxes don’t actually work

The article in 3 ideas:

  1. There is no concrete evidence to suggest going cold turkey with social media has a positive effect on your well-being.

  2. If you completely remove social media from your life and don't replace it with more face-to-face socializing with others you can feel increased loneliness and isolation.

  3. The healthier solution is to cultivate a healthier attitude to social media by engaging more with others, watching the content you consume, and being aware of how interacting with social media makes you feel.
