Hi there 👋 I'm Michelle and welcome to Edition 76 of Design Insight. A weekly newsletter for creatives with a focus on design.
✨ Enjoying Design Insight? Please share it with a friend.
I'm now the proud owner of an iPad (my first Apple product) so I've been experimenting with working away from my office desk setup and the results have been great. I have also started learning how to sketch + draw on the iPad which has been a really fun experience. It's the first time in a long time I've been excited to try and learn something new like this. Lots of fun and practice lies ahead which I'm really excited about!
With that said, I'm on the lookout for helpful sketching resources for beginners so if you have any in mind please do send them on 🙂
Let's get started.

It's Okay Not To Create
The article in 3 ideas:
Sometimes when you experience creative block, one solution might be to power through and do it anyway. Write the article, take the photograph, create the logo. This doesn't always work.
Ask yourself: why do you create to understand what it is about creating that you value? This will help you and remind you why you enjoy creating each time you create.
Creating is an active process, it uses energy and needs to be recharged. Remember this and make time for things that help to recharge your creative batteries.
How gray became the king of color
The article in 3 ideas:
Gray is one of the most common colors used in logo designs and in the automotive industry. It's the second most commonly used color in the fashion industry.
Benjamin Moore has over 200 shades of gray in their line of paint.
There are a few reasons for gray being such a popular color: it's neutral so will go with any other color (perfect for fashion or design), people tend to choose neutral colors like gray, black, or white when buying cars or houses to help with potential resale value.

How can I improve Design Insight?
I'd love to hear from you about how you think I can improve Design Insight. After all, I created this newsletter to help you on your design journey!
Sketching on the iPad is fun. Check out Procreate. It's a good drawing app with layers. Also, if you need inspiration to explore I recommend The Sketch Club newsletter by Ana Vila. She shares fun drawing exercises each week. https://thesketchclub.substack.com/.
