Edition 056 of Design Insight

Hello and welcome back to Design Insight 👋

After a week away from my creative practice I'm back at it 😎

It was tough to take an unplanned week away from my computer but it had to be done to remind me of what I enjoy about my creative practice in the first place.

Let me know what you're working on this week so we can keep each other motivated!

Let's get started.

📃 3 Articles

Choice Architecture

The article in 3 ideas:

  1. Convergent thinking = narrow, only one solution

  2. Divergent thinking = wide, multiple possibilities

  3. Develop a mindset of divergent thinking to differentiate yourself from your competitors.

Negativity bias: how negative experiences cloud our judgment

The article in 3 ideas:

  1. Negativity bias - we tend to dwell more on negative things than positive and they affect us for longer.

  2. Negativity bias can negatively impact our judgment. Negative news is more likely to be believed than positive news.

  3. Be mindful of your thoughts. Once you become aware of this bias you can be more prepared to tackle it. Try to be objective about your thoughts and consider if you're being overly negative.

How to Deal with Information Overload

The article in 3 ideas:

  1. A core value is like a guiding star. It helps you determine what you spend your time on.

  2. Core values can also determine the things you say no to.

  3. You can’t call something a distraction unless you know what it distracted you from.

🔨 2 Tools/Resources

Huemint ➜

  • Huemint uses machine learning to generate colors for graphic design.

  • Instead of generating a flat palette and leaving you to figure out how to apply it, it can generate colors based on how each color will be used in the final design.

Doodle Ipsum ➜

  • The lorem ipsum of illustrations. Just customize your doodles, grab the code, and use them on your web prototypes, landing pages, or no-code tools.

Developers can make better designs by adding small changes to them, like icons to dropdown options. Such an addition provides context to option selects that visually distinguish them from other options. A good example of this could be including a flag when selecting a country.
