A slow website will impact a user's trust in that website. Even a fraction of a second delay is enough to make a user abandon the website and go somewhere else.
There are two types of performance that can be addressed to improve the user experience: measurable + perceived.
Make use of skeleton screens or artificial progress bars to increase the users' trust in a site. Be sure you've done your research though and are implementing the best solution for your site!
